The problem with current liberalism

It has been a while since the current liberal thinking has taken over a large part of the American public. Perhaps even a majority of the populace has embraced liberalism. I see such hypocrisy in what is said about what they believe and the actions they pursue. Because of this hypocrisy, I began to look for an original error in the ideas postulated by current liberal thinkers. It took me only a short time to discover the answer. Liberals for the most part believe that mankind is basically good and that it is only the social influences that cause evil to interfere with that basic goodness. Even non-biblical scholars can quickly see that this is not true. Throughout all of human history there has been no evidence that mankind is basically good. There have been wars continually throughout history and the fact that we are now much more civilized does not seem to be much of a deterrent to wars. So it appears the only explanation for the world events is that man is not basically good but as we are told in the Bible, we are all sinners and evildoers.

It seems an oxymoron to say that Mankind is basically good and then have the current Liberals desiring to pass laws to regulate evil around us. The current argument about gun control demonstrates this. Man is good but since man can act evilly, when possessing a gun, we need to regulate that possession. Large banking institutions are run by man and yet we must pass innumerable regulations to keep the innately good man acting properly.

I can understand and sympathize with the ideas that the current liberal thinking advances. It seems unfair that we in the US have so much and much of the rest of the world has to do without. But, when they insist that the government give money in the form of aid to these countries expecting favorable outcomes because of the amelioration of the causative evil social influence, what we really see is the diversion of the money which is then used to further the oppression of those it was meant to help. In the end we mostly see animosity instead of gratitude by both the leaders who diverted the funds and the people we were trying to help. Expecting to be treated nicely because we treated nicely does not happen.

Another area that seems a disconnection is the thinking that giving money to the poor will make the poor better. Instead we see an entitlement mentality occur. I was a missionary in a 3rd world country and after 15 years of traveling there to provide optical care we soon found that the people became demanding and would return to the line and try to jump ahead of their neighbors in order to get another pair of glasses. So much for displaying the goodness of mankind. Don’t get me wrong I would not trade that time for anything in this world. There is just something about giving and serving that provides meaning and purpose to your life. It is even more joyful when you realize that what you have is not yours anyway but instead it is God’s and He has loaned it to you for a time. God was provider of the skills and opportunities that allowed you to acquire your stuff. Aside from your basic needs, providing what you have acquired to someone else is its main purpose.

Man is, in fact, not basically good. We can easily see from history and the world around us that, as we are told in God’s word, man is basically evil. What God desires from us is that we keep our evil selves under control in the decisions we make. He promises to provide all that we need to accomplish this task. God gives us each a choice, a free will if you would; We can be subject to Him and receive the help He provides for controlling our evil, or we can allow the Government to remove our ability to choose and regulate us into goodness. The first, if all would choose it, would totally remove the need for regulations to control the evil within. Not likely to happen because of the basic evil of mankind. The Second, choosing to have the government regulate our evil will also never succeed because the folks running the government are part of the same basically evil mankind. God gives us a choice. Most of the time we choose evil.

It is not liberalism or conservatism that will fix the evil we see in the current world. It is only God who can change us through his son Jesus Christ. We have access to the power of the creator of the universe by surrendering to his Son. We can become the people lovers that both the liberals and conservatives desire. We can make right choices with His help. Otherwise hang on…the bad things are just getting started.
